The .Prime Minister (Sir > Joseph Ward) received a cable message yesterday from the High Commissioner (Mr. Hall-Jones) as follows:—"Those assembled at Now Zealand dinner send heartiest greetings to their kinsmen in New Zealand." The New Zealand dinner took place in London on Monday night. At a meeting of locomotive men, held in tho Railway Library at Napier, it was decided, after hearing an address from Mr. W. 'Hopkirk, of Wellington branch, and Mr'. Clark, of Palmerslon North, to form a branch of the New Zealand Locomotive Enginedrivers', Firemen and Cleaners' Association, to bo known as the Napier-Waipukurcui branch. Mr. M. M'Grath was elected chairman, ■ and Mr. J. Ingram secretary, of tho new branch. Tho formation of this branch means that the N.Z.E.F. and C.A. has branches established now in all tho important locomotivo centres in tho Dominion. A death occurred on board tho dredger Paritntu during hor voyage from Paisley to Wellington, completed yesterday. A steward named Hood succumbed to heart disease during tho patsaga across' tho Indian Ocean. I

Argument will bo hoard before tho Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) at 9.45 this morning in rcferenco to tho application for lcavo to appeal in tho caso Miller v. Lamb, in which judgment was given for plaintiff yesterday. Two Supremo Court cases aro set down for to-morrow, Fraser v. Campion, an originating summons,'and Clements v. tho District Laud Registrar, a summons to register land. A Chamber sitting will bo held on Friday. Donations of coal for tho recipients of outdoor relief and necessitous persons are much needed by the Hospital Board, and will bo thankfully received. In moving a committee's recommendation, to this effect at the meeting of the board yesterday, tho chairman (Mr. J. G. W. Aitkon) "said that tho public had always responded generously to these appeals in the past. Staples Brewery Company, which gavo 40 tons of coaj last year, had already promised to repeat tho gift. A member: There's one thing about beer, it's generous. In Sydney last week Isaac Watson Hutchinson, employed by tho Telephone Department, brought an action against John Gibbs, of liondi, for £2000 as compensation for injuries sustained by being knocked down in Oxford Street, Paddington, by a motor-car belonging to defendant. The jury gavo a verdict for £490. In the Geelong (Victoria) Police Court last week, John Williams, a horse breaker, was charged with having committed an assault upon two boys named Jennings, agod seven years and nino years respectively. Tho "assault" consisted of cutting the lads' hair with horse-clippers. Defendant stated that tho boys had said that their mother had sent them to have their hair cut. The Bench held that AVilliams had acted without justification, and imposed on him penalties amounting to £2 9s. i As no creditors were present, tho meeting called for yesterday in connection with the estate of John Holmes, merchant, Sydr.ey, and formerly of Wellington, lapsed. Mr. Toogood appeared on behalf of tho petitioning creditors, Messrs. M'Ewen and Co., London and Sydney. It was stated by tho Official Assignco (Mr. Simpson) that bankrupt, who was not represented by counsel, had left the Dominion. The meeting was adjourned sino die. Tho value of tho training afforded under the Boy Scout movement was shown during tho recent competition in signalling on board the Amokura. Among the competitors was a lad who had only belonged to the vessel for a fow weeks,, and therefore could not have gained sufficient knowledge in all branches of signalling to have enabled him to win the prize. As a Boy Scout, however, he had become export in lamp-signalling, and it occurred to him that even although ho could not gain top honours for general efficiency ho might endeavour to do next bestsecure leading place in the particular branch of tho work in which he had been properly trained. It is interesting to noto that when the.results camo to bo announced it was found that he had easily excelled tho other lads in tho morse-signalling department. In connection with the reception ceremony in Post Office Square, the tram scrvico through Jervois Quay will bo suspended from 1.15 p.m. Tho Constable Street cars mil be diverted to Lambton Quay, and cars from Wallace Street will run only to tho Town Hall. A small concert and dance hall, provided with a' gallery, is to bo erected in Willis Street. The plans, which aro now before tho By-laws Committee of tho City Council, havo been' • prepared by Mr. James Bonnie, the designer of the King's Theatre. . The plans for a new Methodist Church, to be erected in Broad Street, Palmerston North, havo been prepared by Mr. James Bonnie, of Wellington, and accepted. The church, which is designed after tho Gothic idea, will be built of brick, finished in red brick with cement facings, and surmounted bv a belfry and lofty spire. . It is designed to accommodate 450 worsliippers, and in the west transept provision is made for tho accommodation of, a pipe organ. Tho church should prove a notable addition to the architecture of tho town.
