In Committee of Supply in the House of Commons a debate arose in connection with the salaries paid to tho members of tho Local Government Board. The Prime Minister, Mr. Asquith, urged that Mr. Burns should bo released from his pledge not to accept an increase in salary. The Government considered that the Department ought to .be on an equality with the Board of Trade. Mr. H. B. Lees-Smith, Liberal member for Northampton, moved as an amendment that the salary of the President of tho Local Government Board remain at *£2000. The amendment was negatived by 159 votes to 13. Mr. W. P. Byles (Liberal member for Salford North), the Eight Hon. T. Lough (Islington), and Mr. J. A. Seddon (Lancashire, Newton), advocated retrenchment instead of increases in salaries.
