N.Z. RUGBY UNION. RECENT EUTT DISTURBANCE. A meeting of the Management Committee of tho New Rugby Union was held last evening, Mr. R. M. Isaacs presiding. There were also present:— Messrs. Si. J. Cronibie. J. H. Laughton, N. Galbraith, H. Kelly, A. Laurenson, / J. Wa.llburtoji, and J. D. Avery (secretary).

Tho Wellington Rugby Union notified i the suspension of J. Marshall, of Melroso j Club, until the end of the first round i for striking a St. J runes player, named 1 Ryder. Somo discussion ensued on tho i sentence imposed on Marshall, several, speakers expressing the opinion that tho , sentence was inadequate. A suggestion j was made that the matter should bi> left: over until the next meeting to see what action tho Wellington Union takes in re-; gard to the second man.-, i Ml. Wallburtoii thought each cafe j should bo dealt with as it cam© along. 1 It was eventually decided to tho i Wellington Union, for a copy of the evi- i donee token at tho inquiry. | On tho application of tho Hawko's Bay . Union, it was docided to remove the disqualification imposed on J. Parker, of tho Wairoa Sub-Union. L. M. Tansey appealed against his suspension for six weeks by tJig Otago Union an u. charge of striking an opponent in tho match, The appeal war lodged, on the ground that tho committeo had no jurisdiction to deal with 'tho case, as Tansey had not been reported to tie union. Further, appellant urged thai, presuming the com- ■ mittee had power to deal with tho case, tho sentence waa, in view of the evidence, ! excessive. The Otago Union forwarded a full copy of tho evidence taken at tho inquiry, which showed thai Tansey made a statement in evidence at an inquiry into tho caso of one, Mitchell, which statement led to his being brought before the Union.' Mr. Kelly thought that a man giving evidence before a should bo privileged, If ho were not, correct evidence could not be gained in the future. Mr. Crombie thought that, under the union's own by-laws, they had 110 jurisdiction to deal with tho cose. Mr. Wallbxirton: "In aJiy caso the man has not bad fair play. He did not understand his position." It was decided that tho appeal should be upheld on the ground that the Management Committee had no jurisdiction, as Tansey*was not reported in accordance with tho Otago By-law No. 30. N.Z. Gillett) has instructed Mr. Webb, tho Attorney-General, to stop the JetfriesJohnson fight, Mr. Webb is commencing proceedings. (Mr. Gillett has evidently changed his mind. On June 3 h& was reported to have declared, that the law permitted bouts, and lie was not going to interfere. The crowd, however, would never stand the negro, and Johnson had 110 chance unless ho was prepared to whip Jeffries, the referee, and half the male population of California as well.] SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

ZAMBESI COURSE DEFENDED. (Reo. June 16, 8.15 p.m.) Fremantle, June IG. In its latest files, the "Sportsman"— discussing tho Arnst-Barry race and tlie suggestions of tho colonial and English writers that tho Zambesi is" nothing better than a plague-infected river, and in some places so "shallow as to bo unfit for sculling—declares:— "If the-Zambesi is not a fit and proper river whereon to decide the championship, we should wi'tliout hesitation inform our readers, and wash our hands of t.ho affair. AVo had assured ourselves of its fitness beforehand, but, in order to obtain further light, interviewed a prominent olßciat of tho South African Chartered Company, which shows that neither man .lias anything to fear as to t.lio fitness of the course for sculling or as to tho climate." CRICKET. TWO CENTUHIES BY TYLDESLEY. London, June 15. Playing for Lancashire against Hampshire, J. T. Tvldesley scored 136 aud 101. BOXING ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OP THE COMMITTEE. Members of the committee' of the Wellington Jioxing Association met last night, Mr. It, \V. M'Villey presiding. The prices of admission in connection with. tho amateur championships were fixed at 45., 35., and 2s. In connection with tho pending tourney under tho auspices of tho Manawatu Association, it was decided to recommend that for one of tho bouts, Smith, of Petone, and Porter, of "Wellington, be matched. J. Gardiner asked if it wero possible for tho association to arrange a return wrestling match between himself and L. Robertson at its forthcoming amateur tourney. Ho was willing that the purso .should be divided in the proportion of 75 per cent, and 25 per cent., or winner to take tho lot. It was decided to reply that consideration might bo given to the proposal on some i'uturo Occasion. OUicials for the amateur championships at tho Town Hall on the 2Sth and 29tli were appointed as under: Messrs. Day and Fordham (stage managers); Messrs. Laurenson and Ludwig (timekeepers); Messrs. Guise .and Sampson (official seconds); Messrs. Smith and Bridge (Drawing Committee); Messrs. Blundell and Talbot (Programme Committee); Messrs. Bridge, Day, Taylor, and Dr. M'Lean (Weighing Committee); and King Committee, Messrs. BeauchampPlatts and Talbot. Correspondence from the New Zealand Boxing Council included a reference to vhe question of representation at conferences of delegates of the associations. It was stated that the objects of the association could not be achieved if the system of proxy continued. Tho suggestion was put forth that an association unable to bo directly represented should forward its views by correspondence, so that its vote might be properly recorded. The communication added that the proxy system in the past htul proved an unqualified failure, inasmuch as the views of tho persons who hold the proxy have invariably been expressed, and not those of tho association intended to be represented. WRESTLING. SMITH AND SCOTT MEET. A GREAT STRUGGLE. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspouden t.) Palmerston, June ID.. A fair amount of interest wus displayed in the wrestling match between Robt. J. Scott, of Stratford, Taranaki, and n. young wrestler, Gordon Smith, of Pahiatua. Tho match was under the auspices of the Manawatu Caledonian Society, who gave a purso of jE2O. Richard Carroll, formerly of Taranaki but at present a local resident, #uid M'Donald, of Dunedin, wrestled a "curtain raiser," and Carroll looked a couple of stone heavier and appeared to bo much stronger. He made a couple of falls quickly. Dr. O'Hrien acted as , judge for the main event, and the stylo for the contest was catch-as-catah-ean. ; Scott gave his weight as list. 51b., and 1 Smith his as 12st. The contest was limited to six rounds. ' Scott was fust behind, and attempted 1 to get the "cradle hold/' but failed, and both got to their feet again, and occupied a lot of time with head, holds, Scott endeavouring to hank Smith, but failed. After ten minutes' desultory work Scott missed a cross buttock. When twenty minutes had gone, Smith made a move to alter the completion of affairs, got a leg hold, and presently heaved Scott over and off the mat. A temporary delay to rebandage a damaged finger of Scott's ended in the wrestlers' mutually agreeing upon a five minutes' spell. For some lime after the resumption Scott bored Smith about the mat, and then the big fellow suddenly got beautifully behind, and, as Smith was forced away from hi in, caught him by the ankle and floored him smartly, but Smith fell oiV the mat, and the strategy of Scott was of no avail. About threequarters of an hour's combat had boon done now, and Scott had been the aggressor throughout. After smother halfhour's wrestling, Doctor O'Brien announced another five minutes' spell. The last round wus of course tho most interesting, because of it being the final half-hour. Jt had been prearranged thai, unless there was a fall, tho decision should be that the match was drawn. As Smith had been on the defensive throughout, Scott voluntarily went to tho iloor tit tho very start, and Smith attempted three-quarter nelson holds, arid failed. Scott then livened things with a double bridge, which Smith wriggled out of. Smith got a "scissors hold" on Die neck, but was not successful. Scolt then chased Smith, and made a crude attempt at a "scissors'* hold. A minute later he had a line hold of tho "scissors", description on the youngster, but. by pure sixoiitfUi, Smith broke loose, amidst tremendous applause. Scott wns now showing remarkable agility, and making things very lively. Smith attempted a half-nelson, but was defeated on it. Scott continued the "scissors" work rather much, and while both wore on their feet for a moment, Scott; made a beuutihil cmtsideleg stroke, and felled Smith with a crash, but, with cat-like agility, Smith contrived to land safely. Scott played "possum" awhile, ar.d then negotiated further "scissors" holds, and the Pahiatua boy's extraordinary strength in loosing himself roused the audience to a groat pitch of enthusiasm. It was indeed superb. With a fine "scissors" hold the Stratford man cast Smith over, but the Pahiatua boy bridged wonderfully twice, and then gained his feet. They went to the mat again quickly, and Scott effected a reverse body bold, which might have decided tho event, but for a brilliant

bridge by Smith. Shortly afterwards Scott placed himself in a dangerous position, and lie could have been beaten by a more experienced man. Scott's favourite hold was a kind of foot-hold round tho neck, by which lie endeavoured to turn Smith over. Smith had a close call two minutes before time, but the young man landed oil' the mat, and an attempt by Scott to bring about, a termination by a Japanese stomach hold failed through tho attacker failing to find a foothold. Time was then called,' aud tho match was declared drawn.
