PASSING OP THE OLD SETTLERS. (By Telegraph — Special Correspondent.) Palmorston North, Juno IG. Denth lias boon playing sad havoc among our old settlers during the last low days. This morning there passed away Mrs. Eliza Mayo, aged 07, at her residency on l''oxton Line. Mrs. Mayo came to New Zealand in ISW in tho ship Bombay, landing at Auckland. For a number of years the deceased lady and her husband and family resided at Bombay and Drury, in the Auckland district, but, for a scorc of year?, they have been living in Palmerston, where they aro all greatly esteemed. Deceased leaves a S own-up family of nine, namely, Mrs. ecrdegnn (Mnngrnrcka), Mrs. Allan Richards (Palmerston), Mrs. Giles (Levin), Mrs. Daliiel (Palmorston), Mrs. ii. Littlcjohn (Palmerston), Mrs. Morell (Palmerston), Messrs. A. R. Mayo (Aorangi), and I'. W. and J. G. Mayo (Palmerston). Last night Mr. George Richardson died «t his residence at Tiakitahuna, aged 72 years. Deceased was well-known, and generally esteemed in . Palmerston. He was the second son of Mr. G. J. Richardaon, of Croydon, England, and came to New Zealand at the age', of 15 in the early fifties. He borty u fuir share in . :the 'difficulties and dangers of the early days, and, as a member of the New Zealand mounted forces, he served for some years on the East Coast in the operations against Te Kooti, and won the.Now Zealand Medal and Clasps. He settled respectively at .'Moutoa, Raukawa Island, and ; Tiaktahnna, and was connected 'with Palmerston. from its earliest days. He marriud thu third daughter of the late Mr. Joshua Wood, of .Moutoa, and is survived by lus widow and second son. Deceased has been for years engngod in farming operations at liakitahuna, and, at ono time, was a frequent visitor' to Palmerston, but, during the past year, increasing ago and bodily infirmity confined him : to his home. A third death among ' the ranks of Palmerston's old settlers occurred yesterday, when the demise of Mrs. N. M. I'erson was announced. Deceased, who was a native of Germany, has resided in Palmerston for about 35 years, where she had a host of friends. She leaves a husband and family of four to mourn their loss. The much-needed and long-agitated-for additions and alterations to the Palmerston Gaol aro at last bting carried out, a staff of workmeu being now engaged in the operations. Tho Manawatu Officers' Club held its annual meeting last night. It was decided that officers\should make special studies, with the object of giving lectures to members of the club at its bi-monthly meetings. Colonel Robin is to bo re(liiested to repeat the lecture which he rcently gave to the Officers' Club in Wellington on -the "Territorial System," and Captain Richardson is also .to be asked to deliver a lecture. The following officers were elected Patron, His Excellency, Lord Islington; president, Lieuten-ant-Colonel Pringlo; vice-presidents, Captains Peach and Mounsey: lion, secretary, Captain-Adjutant Palmer; hon. treasurer, Captain Jickell; librarian, Captain Whalley; auditor, Lieutenant Foote; committee, Captain Warden, and Lieutenants Willoughby and Louisson. It was decided to arrange a staff ride at an early date. The Palmerston Orchestral Society has ongaged Miss Irene O'Brien and Mr. P. C. Baines as the vocalists for their concert at the end of this month. Mr. J, R. Graham, who recently sold out his interest in the Manawatu Auctioneering Company, is about to start in business in a similar line at Te ICuiti, in the Auckland province. Graham's many friends here will wish him success in his new venture.
