AUCKLAND ELECTEIC TEASIWAYS. At the annual meeting of shareholders of tho Auckland Electric Tramways Company, held in London on May 2, the chairman, Mr. C. J. Tesetmoier, who was at oiieVime general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, said:— "Turninpr v> the prolit and loss Recount, the groes receipts amount to £162,594, as against £165,655 in tho previous year. We carried 28.736,000 passengers, an increase of 2,692,000, and tho passenger receipts-chow ah Increase of £16,533. This represents receipts per route mile of track of £8089 per annum, which, I think, compares very favourably with' the results obtained in larßi, ccuirea of population. A good portion of the increase in our traffic is due to the fact' that during last year the whole of our present system of 22 miles was in operation lor the whole of the year, whereas in the previous year the Mount Eden extensions were only opened for traffic for a portion of the year. It is very satisfactory io lind that the extensions wo have coiwtructed recently in the suburban districts are returning tho same proportionate revenue as tho older portions of our system. The population of Auckland, which is now approaching 100,000, has shown marked growth during recent years, and there are many indications that Auckland, and it may be said Now Zealand generally, are at ..present onjoyinp a very high measure of prosperity. As an instance of this it. may be remarked that tile cxportß of New Zealand ore now 20 millions ii year, and this from n population of approximately one million souls. This saya a very great deal for tho wealth, creating capacity of the country. With the many natural advantages that Auckland possesses, there is no doubt whatever, I think, that It will continue lo nrocnw;, and oxtend, and we may confidently look forward to this being reflected in a continuous expansion of our truffle receipts. The working expenses are £11.000 more; while power and running, the cost of which was £67,732, shows an increase of £0434. A good deal of this increase la duo to the increased car inilca£c that wo
rail, but to a very much larger extent it is occasioned, by the higher scale of wages ing the greater pan. of llic year. Tho Day of our lnotorincn ranges from Is. to la. Hi. per hour, and of conductors from 10d. "to Is. per hour, which is probably more than double what prevails in this country. This higher standard of earnings of the working class community is a> distinctive characteristic of New Zcaland's social conditions. With a high urotectivo tarilf no doubt their standard of expenditure ia correspondingly higher, hut whether it is an eiTcp.t or not, it is unquestionably the case that the material welfare of the worker in New Zealand is far in advance of anything that we arc accustomed to in this country. He may spend more, but he receives more, and his expenditure upon absolute necessities which enables him to indulge freely in the comparative luxury of tramway travelling." CUSTOMS REVENUE.
