CARTERTON ITEMS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. K. (J. .Tarrett, the well-known poultry fancier, of Mastertou, has promised the South Wairarapa Poultry Association a special prize ior the winner in light breeds of the utility section at the show to be held here on July 20 and 21. Tho prize will take the form of a setting of eggs from his well-known, strain of white leghorns, and is therefore well worth winning, A handsome Loewe pipe and case has been presented to the Carterton Gun. Club by Hγ. W. Howard Booth. It will form the second prize when the riflo given by the Colonial Ammunition Company is competed for. Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of' Oddfellows are making elaborate preparations for the ball to be held here next month to celebrate the centenary of the Order. A strong committee has the function in hand, and as the occasion is one which does not occur every day, it- is intended to make the ball a memorable one. ' Mr. and Mrs. D. Eeid, of Carterton, who are on a holiday visit to Australia, have reached Hobart after a rough passuge from the Bluff. They arrived there in splendid health, which is a source of pleasure to their many friends. A beautiful silver-mounted salad bowl was presented to Bro. N. M'Kenzie at a meeting of Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., as a trophy for having introduced tho most new members to the lodge during the year. Mr. S. Herrick was the successful tenderer at Is. per yard for 100 cubic yards of metalling'- on Wheatstone, Faraday, and Davey Streets, in the Carterton Borough; Mr. T. Aplin Is. Sd. per yard for 150 yards on Belvedere Eoad, and Mr. F. AV. Burling Is. Id. for 50 cubic yards on Garrison Street. ■ The following officers have been elected for Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., for the ensuing term:—A.D., Bro. M'Kenzio; V.A., Bro. F. Koydhouse; secretary, Bro. H. Hart; treasurer, Bro. E. Martin; T.G., Bro. C. Whyte; 0.G., Bro. E. Wallis; A.D.B.'s. Bros! W. Abbott and B. Canton; V.A.B.'s, Bros. M. Hannah and A. Thomas. Whooping cough is very prevalent among children in Cartertou at the present time, nnd in one or two cases it is troubling adults. Heavy rain set in here on Wednesday, and although it was hardly needed, will not do any harm.
