SOCIETY WEDDING
COSTLY PRESENTS. By Tolorri>s*- prese Aesoctatloq-GoDyrlchl (Rec. June 9, p.m.) London, June 9. Viscount Maidstoue was married to Margaret, daughter of Mr. Anthony Drexel, at Stj Margaret's, Westminster. The presents and jewellery were valued at ~£50,000. There were 1500 guests. Writing from Germany, Mr. Von Reden, o former resident of the Eketahuna district, states:—"Things look pretty black here politically. The bulk of the people are becoming more and more Socialistic, but one cannot blame them. They have little or nothing to say in the government of the country, have to pay very heavy taxation, and are trodden upon and annoyed by the most insolent and brutal police. It will'come to an explosion.some day. At present it is only prevented by the police and a great display of military power. _ I-ain sure I am not much of n Radical—in fact, in New Zealand I was looked upon ns a Conservative—but really do not blame- the people if they begin to kick against the pricks a little."—"Taihape Times." It; was stated by the Prime Minister, in replying to a deputation at Auckland on Tuesday, that there was absolutely uo truth in tile allegation that the Railway Department differentiated between the North and 1 South Islands in the matter of railwav freights. , The rates were the same in both islands, but in some cases in which it was found necessary to compete against water carriage for short distances there were some reductions. Otherwise, he said, there were no exceptions from tie uniform scale of rates that had been fixed in each class.
