THE NEED FOR BOYS.
FARMERS' UNION VIEWS. The assisted immigration of boys' for farm labour, which has been begun by the Government, and is opposed by Labour organisations, appears to meet with the hearty approval of tho Farmers' Union. Mr. ]3. C. Jack, Dominion secretary of that body, speaking to a representative of this paper, said there was a great demand in all narts of the country for boys to work on i'arms, and it seemed impossible to find enough boys in this country. When Mr. Sedgwick, who is acting in the matter from England, was here he conferred with representatives of the Farmers' Union, and it was Mr. Jnck's belief that, if suitable financial arrangements could be .made, the union might itself actively take the matter up. There was much work that was essentially boy's work to be done on farms, and he bad received many inquiries for boy labour. Only that day he had had a visit from a farmer who had been trying very hard, but without success, to obtain a boy for farm work. There was also a shortage of boys in the trades and professions throughout the Dominion. Looking to a broader aspect of the question, Mr. Jack added that Now Zealand was badly in need of more population, and that those who came out here in their youth should develop' into better colonists than those who had come to maturity in Old Country environments.
