KARORI VIA KELBURNE.

NORTHLAND VETOES TRAMWAYS. The principal business at the annual meeting of the Northland Ratepayers' Association last evening was the discussion which took place between the association aud a deputation of Karori' residents (represented by Messrs. R. H. Weddo and Agnien Smith), ou tiie subject of the proposaj to connect up the Kelburno cable-car terminal station with the tunnel on the Wel-lington-Karon electric tramway line, by means of an electric tramway along the Upland Road. It was stated that the Kelburne Tramway Company had agreed to pay £300 a year as a subsidy to the undertaking, in the event of it being accomplished. Mr. Wedde considered that the proposal could bo carried out at a cost of £8000 plus a sum of £440 odd per annum to provide for interest and sinking fund. The saving in car mileage, he estimated, would amount to about £540 per annum, with a saving to the public of H- per fare. Even if the construction of this line meant the abandonment of the present section between the Botanical Gardens and the Tunnel, the "scrapping" . of that section would be justified by the saving in time and money which, he contended, would be effected under the proposed scheme, and would thus be seen that the saving in car mileagereferred to wouid be practically sufficient to meet the interest and sinking fund. Continuing, the speaker that whoever took up the idea would certainly benefit, and Karori was desirous ihat - Northland should participate. They were partners in a losing concern at present. If trafficwere diverted via the Upland Road, the loss on the present section would be'greater still. That being so, it was only Tight that Northland should be given an opportunity of coming in. The proposal had not jet been considered by the Karori Council. The movers desired first of all to get some agreement of opinion on the matter before going further.

After considerable discussion, a resolution was carried to the effect that Northland was not prepared to agree to the proposal.
