NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[BT GLENCOB.3 The Otaki Maori Racing Club's meeting takes place at. the Horowhenua Racecourse, Levin, to-day and to-morrow. From tho large number of good performers engaged at the meeting, there is every probability of excellent sport on the two days. Special holiday excursion trains will leave Thorndon Station ut. 7.10 and 8.20 -a.m. to-day, whilst on Saturday excursion tickets will be issued to racegoers, and will be available by the ordinary 7.45 a.m. and 9.10 trains. Trains will leave Levin on tho return journey a(" 5 and 5.45 p.m. According to the "Sporting Times," Frank Wootton's suspension terminates his contract to ride for Lord Derby. The Williamstown Cup, to be run on November 1, in Melbourne Cup Week, is this year worth 1-500 so vs., and a trophy valued at 50 sovs. Tho sum of c£4B,(iGl passed through the totalisator during the three days' racing of the South Australian Jockey Club's meeting last month. The total investments for the season amounted to £269,12(1, or .£IB,OOO more than last season's total. "Word from Feathersfnn records the death of the well-known sportsman,' Mr. Robert Ross, owner of the imported horse C'hatsworth. The deceased leaves a widow and one child. Tho race for the Oaks ia to bo ruu at Epsom to-day.

S. Peid will ride Dawn in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie to-day, and Nylaud in the Members' Handicap. W. Young has been granted a jockey's license by Hie AVanganui Jockey Club, and will be riding ai the Otaki meeting to-day. Before leaving New Plymouth for Otaki, Plantation and Silver Pox are reported to have Iwth done good gallops. Plantation is wonderfully well at tho present time. J. M'Laughlin has gone to Ellerslie to superintend the saddling up of Multiple. During M'Laughlin's absence in Auckland, J. Oldfield will look after El Dorado and others of his team at Greenmeadows. H. Gray is to have tho mount on Mulin the Jervois Handicap at tho Auckland Racing Club's meeting to-day. Kia'tere, Sol, Loch Fync,"'and Capitol, who are engaged in the Great Northern Steeplechase on Saturday, have all won the race in previous years. Maori King and King Billy arc both under orders for Australia. The former is to race at the spring meetings, and King Billy is to do stud duty on his owner's Queensland station. Until this season, trainer G. Price had not taken part in a race meeting at Auckland since he rode Grey Seaton at Avondale nine years ago. Prior to "Wimmera. being entrained at Wanganui for Auckland, the box in which he was to travel was thoroughly disinfected, as a safeguard against sucil maladies as influenza. Armamen+o, who was heavily backed on both days of the recent Oamaru meeting, will bo racing at the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting to-day. El Dorado has. been suffering from a severe cold since his return to Gtwjimeadows from tho YTangamri meeting, and the services of a veterinary surgeon were called in for him. At latest reports the Gold Pieef gelding was on the iniprove. Magneto was racing a little beyond her distanco at the Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting, but she is engaged in a five furlong race at Ellerslie to-day. Since being purchased by Mr. Buckley, St. A'idan has only won one small race, and is consequently low do\vn in tho handicaps now. At two and three years of ago he raced well, and has only got to strike form again to win in the South Island. There is no doubt -that Mahufca is a more than useful liorse when .ho is in a galloping mood, and if he jumps anything like as well as ho gallops, he is bound to win a good hurdle race.
