THE DERBY. lemberg wins on the TOST. NEIL GOW FOURTH. Uy Telceraph—Press Association—Copyright London, June 1. At the Epsom Summer meeting to-day, the following was the result of the race for THE DERBY STAKES of fiflOO. sovs., for entire colts and fillies, foaled in 1907; colts list, and fillies Sst. 01b. Neil Gow was troublesome at the post Greenback led, with Lemberg, Wild flower, and Neil Gow in close attend ance. The positions were practically un altered till a few yards from the post Lemberg won by a neck, two lengths be tween Greenback and Charles O'Malley, Neil Gow, close up, fourth. Time, 2rain. 35 l-ssec.—a record.
Lemberg, the winner of this year's J)erby f is a half-brother to last year's St. Legov winner ihyardo. According to recent English files, Lemberg was to be ridden by B. Dillon. As a two-year-old there seemed to be every likelihood that Lemberg, like Bayardo, would have an unbeaten record, and it was an encouraging coincidence that the son of Cyllene should make a winning debut in the New Stakes, a race chosen for the first appearance of Hayardo a twelvemonth previously. All went well till the Champagne at Doncaster, when lie finished behind Neil Gow and Admiral Hawk©, but a slight indisposition may have been a warrantable excuse for his defeat, for lie won nest time out, and though having no Neil Gow to tackle in tho Middel Park Plate, decisively turned the tables on Admiral Hawke, and placed that coveted stake to the credit of his owner. His other victories included Chesterfield Stakes, Rous Memorial Stakes, and Dcwliurst Plate. This season Lemberg was defeated by a head in tho Two Thousand Guineas by Neil Gow, but, as many predicted, he has turned tho tables on his rival in the longer race. Being in-bred to Isonorny, slaying is naturally the Derby winner's forte, and the terrific pace set would be all in his favour. Cyllene, sire of Lemberg, had previously sired two Derby winners in Cicero and Minora. Ho has been a success at the stud from tho very beginning. Liko other stallions, his first year's produce created little stir, but in his second season Cyllene made a jump of over ,£15,000. 'in 1005, when still a young sire, ho was fourth on the 1 winning sires' list with >£21,555. In 1006 his stock won «£12,185, 1007 .£10,539, 1008 .£7OOO, and last year he headed the list with ,£35,550 opposito his name. Ho is sure to be near the top again this year, for, in addition to Lemberg, there is Maid of Corinth (Cyllene—Sceptre) to help him. Unfortunately for English breeders, Cyllene was sold some few years ago to South American owners, who did not hesitate to give <£25,000 for him before his second Derby winner was heard of.
Mr. "Fairie," owner of Lemberg, is an ex-Australian, who made a fortune in mining and is now a lavish patron of racing. During tho last two seasons he won over ,£40,0(10, principally due to .Bayardo.- Taken altogether, Mr. Fairie, his horses, and Alec Taylor proved a powerful combination last year, and there seems every probability that they will make a deep mark also on the season of 1910. Had Neil Gcw won this yeir's Derby, ho would have given J). Maiier his fourth winning ride in the race, and Lord Rosebery would have won as many times with horses of his own breeding. Greenback, runner-up ■to Leniberg, won six raccs out of ten starts as a two-year-old. AN INDIAN OFFICER'S LOTTERY LUCK. ' (Rec. June 2, 11.10 p.m.) Calcutta, June 2. Capt. Raban, of the Indian Army, now on leave, drew Lemberg in the Calcutta Turf Club sweepstakes. , He immediately sold half his share to a London syndicate for ,£7500. The first prize is worth <£50,000.
