After breakfast Aoraiigi easily beat Stralhmoira. once around on the inside of the grass in liuin 53 i-Ssec. Advantage was too good, for Magneto over five furlongs on. the sand in Imiu. Mahnrauui did a similar task, jumping slowly. Audax, To Arai, Le Beau, Cavaliero, Capitol, and Arty were companions over a round of tho big country. With the exception of Arty, all jumped well. Calwa, Cudweed, and Flying Cloud did a similar task, the last-named falling. Lovoll auditedM'GTegor did tho same journey, fencing in good style. Mozart, King Hippo, Whatashot, and Golden Glow jumped the fences on the flat. Wimmera, Lethean, Overtime, Mendip, and Waitapu arrived this morning. A JOCKEY INJURED. Napier, May 31. Luke Wilson, a well-known jockey, met with an accident to-day. Whilst exercising horses at. Napier Park, a horse reared and fell on him. Ho was removed to a private hospital, and was found to bo suffering from bmises on tho lower porti6n of the back and stomach, in addition to which there may bo some fracture of the pelvis. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Bi Glencos.] Nominations for the Napier Park Racing Club's winter meeting close tomorrow. Trainer D. Nyhan, who took Havoc and Dick G. to Christchurch for Saturday's trotting meeting, returned to Wellington yesterday. At the Bacchus Marsh (Vic.) races recently, the New Zealand Cup winner Grand Rapids was among the horses competing. An Australian paper states that he finished fully forty lengths behind his field. He was very much on the big side, and his appearance otherwise was ungainly. ' ' I .At tho conclusion of the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting, the Awapuni trainer, G. Price, will leave on a flying visit to Sydney. As Prico has always held a good opinion of tho Australian thoroughbreds, it will be no surprise if he ' brings back a horse or two with him. In all probability the locally-owned Penates and Mon Ami will bo entered for the principal events at the Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting. 0. Madden, who for many years was ono of the most successful jockeys in England, is now following tho occupation of trainer. He 6ent out his first winner in April. Kopii acted as runner-up to Sir Tristram in last year's contest for tho Ran--, kawa Cud. The weights were then Sir Tristram," Bst. 71b., and Kopu, 7st. 81b. This year Sir Tristram has Bst. 131b. and Kopu 7st. J2lb. Tho biggest weight ever carried to victory in tho Raukawa 'Clip was Ost. 111b, under which impost Convoy won tho raco in 1902.
Paisano, who contracted cold at Wanganui, is not so bad as was at first apprehended. It is considered certain that he will be well over his trouble by the time that the Grand National Hurdle;. Race at Riccarton comes up for decision..
In the matter of weight Penates was , not badly tieated at Otaki, so the fact that he lias been allowed to drop out of his engagements there may mean that all is not well with him.
Prophet, who has lOst. 4lb. in tho Great Northern Hurdles, evidently pleased tho critics by his good gallop yesterday morning, as ho was, later in the day, freely backed in doubles, coupled with tho steeplechase candidates, Audax and Eaitere.
Usually the Porirua stable has a representative in tho hurdle races at the Otaki meetings, but no member of the team is among the acceptors for tho jumping event ne.xt Friday.
Mr. I\ Preston bus expressed his intention to nominate Eqnitas and Milan for\tho Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps at the Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting, but no arrangements for the trip will bf made until it is seen how the weight-adjuster treats them.
Bobrikoff, though nominally in retirement for the winter, is. occasionally taken on to the tracks at Napier and given a little, exercise. ■ Recently the black gelding has proved unmanageable for the stable lads, and Davis has had to take to the saddle on.moro than one occasion to get him in hand. A few mornings ago Luke Wilson was given tho mount, to exercise Bobrikoft, but the latter did not appreciate the change, and catchin" Wilson unawares, threw him out of tho saddle.
An English writer states that B.Dil- • V vll k havo the mount on Romberg in tho Derby to bo run to-day. Dillon has not yet ridden ii winner of the Derby. The only classic race that he lias been successful in is the One "Thousand ? UI !om, S on n F ' a ; r ,•» "OS. ™d on Electra in ». -D Maher, who will havo the mount on Neil Gow to-day, has'already ridden three Derby, winners, viz., Rock band, Cicero, and Spearmint. Ho has also won a Two Thousand, One Thousand and Uaks while on two occasions lie has steered the winner of tho St. Leger.
