It wits announced some time ago that Sheppard had decided to retire from the track, but ho ultimately resolved to continue for another season. He will be remembered as one of the American sprinters at the latest Olympic games, who earned for himself great distinction. He won the 800 metres (871.7 yards) race in lmin. 52 d-ssee.; the 1500 metres (1639.5 yds.) event in 4miu. 3 2-osec.; and was one of the "U.S.A. team which won the sixteen hundred metres (1749.8yd5.) relay race. Sheppard has also covered half a mile in lmin. 53 3-sscc. The record boolc gives the best time for GOO yards as 71sec. by T. E. Burke, in New York City in 1896, 'and E. H. Montague in London in 190S, whilst the quickest timo for seven hundred yards is given as S9sec., by J. Pudney, in England, ill 1856.
