Welsh and M'Farland fought twenty rounds at tho National Sporting Club for a purse of and .£2OO a side. The ilglit ended in a draw.
(ltec. Hay 31, 10.35 p.m.) London, May 31. The crowd at the National' Sporting Club rivalled that on the occasion of the Jackson—Slavin contest. M'Farland, «ho was the aggressor, was also the cleverer. He had all the .best of the first ten rounds. Welsh afterwards forced the fighting. The crowd believed M'Farland won comfortably and received the decision hostilely.
"Welsh is the English light-weight champion, whilst M'Farland is a clever American boxer. According to the articles of agreement, fouivounce gloves were to be, used in the contest. For some time Welsh has been erring to get a match with "Battling" Nelson, and recently got an offer of .£IOOO in connection with such a match. Only a few days later, however, he received an offer of JSSOOO for a match against Wolgast, who lately bea.t Nelson for the light-weight championship of the world, but had not, when tho last mail left, decided whether he would accept it. It appears also that "Welsh is after the welter-weight championship of England. Jnst before tho last mail left England, M'Farland beat Lee, the examateur champion feather-weight of England rather oasily. Welsh had also just accounted for Daniels. The result of the matoh, which has just been decided will make the position in regard to the lightweight championship both of England and the world rather interesting.
