So far as cessation of business is concerned, the observance of the King's Birthday in Wellington next Friday will be pretty general. The Government has now decided to close all the Departmental offices, thus reversing the decision which was previously arrived at. The banks and warehouses, the butchers, grocers, drapers, clothiers, printers, and ironmongers have for the most part decided to close, many of them being virtually obliged to do so on account of the provisions of industrial awards and the Factory Act. Mr. H. Seaton, president of the Shopkeepers' Association, said that that body was leaving its members a perfectly free hand. He thought the position had Gomewhat changed since lie was last interviewed, and he now believed that a large proportion of the shopkeepers would keep their establishments open this afternoon and close on Friday, either for the afternoon or the whole day. He added that the association intended to renew its "(Torts to get all special holidays observed on a certain day of the week— preferably Wednesday—so as to avoid confusion, uncertainty, and dislocation of business on future occasions.
