OBITUARY.
PROFESSOR COOK. (By Telegraph—Pres3 Association.) Christchurch, May 23. The death of Professor Cook, formerly of Canterbury ; College, is reported from Marton, where'his son practises as a solicitor. Ho was one of the first three professors of Canterbury College—Messrs. MacMillnn Brown and Bickerton being the other two. They came out to NewZealand at the end of 1874, and set to work with enthusiasm to build up a gTeat educational institution. These thro* men wore largely responsible for tho pre-emin-enoe of Canterbury College in the early days. At tho end of the 'seventies Professor Brown took up English and history, which he belioved to be of particular importance in a young country, Professor Haslam being brought out to fill tho chair of classics. Some of tho most brilliaut university men in New Zealand passed through Professor Cook's hands, including Professor Rutherford, an authority on radio-activity. Professor Cook retired a couple of years ago owing to failing health.
