With regard to the pending by** election to (ill tho vacancy caused by the death of Mr. Baling M.l', for Auckland East, tho "Star" on Thursday nighiJ said: — • . Tho' Opposition supporters hold el meeting to-night to consider the seleo<. tion of a candidate .in tho Rc'ornS party's interests. Messrs. E. W. Alison, and H. "W. Northcroffc, it is understood, liavo been waited upon by City East electors, and asked to stand in. the Opposition interests, but have declined to do so. Mr. Alison, in reply to the representations niado to him, said he was forced to declino on the advice of his medical attendant. Two other gentlemen suggested as possible candidates in the Reform party's interests are Mr J. H. Gunson and the HevJ. Clarke. Tho Labour party, holds a meeting to-night for the purpose of selecting a candidate to contest the City? East seat under tho Labour banner* ' The late Mr. F. E. Baume's old election comraitteo met yesterday and passed a. resolution of sympathy with Mrs., Baumo. It was decided that the com- , mittee would support Mr. A. M. Myers as an Independent Liberal in tho forthcoming campaign. Mr. P. J. Ncrheny, chairman of the Auckland branch of tho Liberal and Labour Federation, is spoken of as a likely candidate, and has boon approached by a number of CityEast electors on tho subject. Mr. fter-. heny has promised to give a definite answer in tho course of a day or two. Mr. J. Patterson, a member of the Urty Council, and another prominent member of tho Liberal and Labour Federation, is regarded as a likely Liberal candidate in tho event of Mr. Nerheny not coming: The Socialist party has decided noik to bring out a candidate.
