■•'NEWS. . (Prom Oar Special CorresoondentJ PETONE WEST SCHOOL. The newly-elected committee of the i'etono West School met on Thursday, evening. Members present were: Messrs. Castle (chairman), Parrant, Cotton, llaynard, fivans, and Davis. The Education Board offered a sot of historic pictures for tho use o£ the school at a nominal fee, and the chairman was empowered to purchaso these. Permission was granted to the Hntfi and Petonc Ministers' Association to give religions instruction for half an; hour on one day each week. Messrs. Castle, Birrridgo, and Evan3 wore appointed delespites to the Scuoo? Committees' Association. A COCOA. CENTRE. A very interesting and instructive aAi dress on "Bournvulc and Its Produc* tions" was given in St. David's school* room, Petone, by Mr. Meadoweroft, on, Thursday evening. There was a good audience, and .the Rev. A. Thomsoni occupied the chair. Tho interest of thrf lecture, treating, as it did, of a greafl cocoa manufacturing centre, was enW hanced by lantern slides. AN "INGIJISIDE." A very successful "Ingleside" was/ celebrated by Scottish residents ofl Potone on Thursday evening, the ocean sion being a. welcome to Miss Mitchell, of Martou,. who was, at one time, a{ worker in the local society. Exhibitions of fancy Highland dancing were given by Miss Beryl Sharp and Miss Rachel. M'Whirter,. a song by Mr. musical item by Miss Rodgers, Highland reel by the Masses Sharp and; M'Whirtor, and Messrs. Finlay and! Sharp, while selections on tho bagpipea were contributed by Messrs. Dewhirsif and Finlay. Supper was provided bjj the ladies. . . ,
DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL MATTERS*! The first meeting ctf the newly-electeffi committee- of the Petono District High} School was held on Thursday there being present: JVlessrs. D. zi© (chairman). Cairns, Hill, Townsend, Kirk, and. Bird (secretary), i In reference to a ..high school proper) for Petone, the Education Board wrotgj stating that it would mean the dises-( tablishment of the fiutt District Higßl School, ■ In discussion it appeared that the] majority of tho Petone committee dus not wish this to happen,. and, on the; motion of Mr. Bird, it was resolved tot endeavour to arrange a conference with) the Hutt School Committee on the first* Friday of nest month. The proposal ia that the conference shall go fully into: the question of a. ihigh school for thi. Hutt Valley. The Hutt and Petone Ministers' As«. sociatiou requested tho committee to! allow them to impart religious instrucj. tion after school hours for half an hovm on one day per week. Tho request! ■ was granted. . _ Mr. M'Kenzie was appointed to acs as the committee's representative on| the Petone West School Bazaar Conn mitteo.
A letter from tho citizens of Petonfij asking tho committee to be present aij a- deputation, which is to wait on thef Education Board, and discuss the main ter of a high school proper for Petonej caused considerable discussion. \
Mr. Cairns mo-Ted: "That, as the H« donation meeting recently held re high! school for Petone was an irresponsibla one from the standpoint of this com* mittee, and, seeing that the committee have received an official reply from the) Minister, and have decided on a ent course of action, they, therefore,, , caunot tako any part in. the dpputa-j tion."
The motion was carried. An application is to bo made to the( Education Board for certificates of merit for high school pupils attending tlio cookery classes at tho Technical School. The headmaster reported that_ tw| average roll attendance in the primary department for tho month was 630;J average half-daily attendance, 583.1} half daily percentage on average roll, 92.5. Secondary department: Average , roll number, 72; halMaily attendance, 63; half-daily percentage on average roll, 94.1. As Friday, May 27",, will be tho conn mencement of the first terra holidays, a' "parents' day" will bo held on thai date. The headmaster requests as many, parents as possible to tfo present. -
