FIRST DAY'S RESULTS. (By Telecranli-Prosa Association.) ■' ' Christchurch, May 17. The Christchurch Competitions Society opened its series of literary and musical competitions to-day. The following are the principal results:— . Recitation fqr gentlemen any age.—"So-> phia l'erovsknya" (Joaqiiin Miller), A. P. Devereaux (Christchurch), 1; K. H. Hobday (Dunedin) and A. D. Aitken (Christchurch) equal, 2i F, Cordcry (Christchurch), 3. ... .•-...- • Soprano" solo.—Miss Rita Lyons (Wellington) "Robert Toi Que J'aimc, l;' Miss liny Newmnn (Wellington) "Sing Sweet Bird," 2; Miss Nellie Rhodes (Amberley), 3. Regarding Miss Lyons the judge remarked that hers was the best performance lie had ever heard in the section in any competition anywhere. Shakespearean recitation for ladies.— "Lorenzo's Eulogy of Music" (Merchant of Venice).—Miss Florence J. Paccy (Dunedin), 1; Miss Una, H. Owen, 2; Misses G. Helen Gardner and Esther M. Devereaux, 3. Bass solo.—"She Alone Charmeth my Sadness."—No first awarded; Mr. W. J. Salkeld (Christchurch), 2; Mr G F W Smith (Waimate), 3. Piano solo (15 and under 18).—"On Wings of Song."-Jliss Kathleen ' Cres;well (St. Albnn's, Christchurch), 1; Doris Aymes (Christchurch), 2.
