The newspaper oifices were besieged with inquiries early on Saturday afternoon, and tho confirmation of the sad news of tlie King's death was soon followed by the tolling of bells, half-masting-of all flags, draping of shops in black, and the suspension of business for the afternoon All athletic and amusement fixtures were, .of course, cancelled. The issue of tho evening paper, containing tho account of the King's illness and death, was eagerly awaited, and, everywhere, tho mournful event, was tho ono topic of conversation. AT GREYTOWN. Creytown, May 9. All business places closed here as soon as tho King's death was announced, and remained closed till 7 p'.m. On Sunday the vicar of St. Luke's Church made special reference to the King's death, and suitable hymns and music were rendered. IN MOURNING.COLOURS. Palmerston, May 9. The whole front of the Municipal Chambers are being draped in. the Royal mourning colours to-day. In all the churches in town yesterday reference was made to tho calamity which lias fallen on the British nation by tho death of King Edward. "WITH BOWED HEADS." Marton, May 8. When the Rangitikei County Council met after luncheon at Marton on Saturday, the chairman (Councillor R. K. Simpson) referred in feeling terms to tho death of his Majesty. He moved: — "This council desires to place on record its deep regret at the death. of his Majesty the lato King, Edward VII, and its sense of the great loss whicli tho British Empire in particular and tho world in general has sustained. Tho council further desires to express its deep sympathy with Queen Alexandra, and the members of the Royal Family in their sudden bereavement." Tho Chamber of Commerce met tonight and passed a resolution expressing grief at tho death of tho King, and immediately adjourned. Now Plymouth, May 9. Tho Taranald County Council, at its monthly meeting to-day, passed a resolution requesting tho Premier to convey to his Excellency tho Governor the .deep regret of the inhabitants of tho Taranald County on the death of the King, sympathy with Queen Alexandra and tho Royal Family, and their expressions of loyalty to the proclaimed King. Tho. council then., adjourned. Tho Now Plymouth Borough Council to-night passed a somewhat similar resolution and adjourned; as a mark of,. respect. Arrangements are being'made for a parado of tho Garrison. Band, volunteers, .and school cadets at tlie reading of the proclamation to-morrow., ' ' WOODVILLE.
