DAMAGE BY FIRE.

A fire broke out in a newly-built three-roomed cottage in Sutherland Road a little after 9 o'clock on Saturday morning. The cottage, which was owned by Mr., J. J. Moore, had not been occupied. The roof and one of the partitions were damaged before the flames were got under. The cause of the outbreak is unknown.

The firo brigade received a call to the Donbank Private Hotel, Percival Street, at midday on Sunday. The alarm was caused by the boiling-over of some fat in the kitchen, but no damage was done.

1 The seven-roomed house of Mr. Kurupo Tareha, a well-known Hawke's Bay Native, at Waiohiki, was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday morning. Among the furnishings consumed was a valuable collection of Maori mats, ornaments, and other articles, including the fine sword of the great , chief Tareha, Kurupo's father.
