JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.

PORT PROGRESS. <By Telegraph.—Soccial OarrosDondonf.l , Wanganul, May 9. The pilot reports that there is now 14ft. of water on the bar at high water springs. The Harbour Board decided (in addition to pushing the south mole further out) to extend the north mole another 300 ft., which 1 should hare the effect of further deepening the channel. The .result of the harbour works has been a natural reclamation of 11J acres of the foreshore at Castlecliff, and steps will be at once taken to have this naturally-formed ground (caused by the north mole trapping beach drift and banking it up) vested in the Harbour Board. A special committee has been set up by the Harbour Board to interview the Minister for Railways in order to ascertain if something cannot be done to alter the difficult and dangerous conditions of shipping stock from the cattle wharf. The export in live stock from here is considerable, especially to the West Coast of the South Island, but shippers can only get access to the wharf across the railway yard, which is usually blocked with trucks, and where shunting operations are always going on. A clear road could bo fenced off to give access along the river front at little expense and no inconvenience, but. the Railway Department hitherto has completely ignored the board's representations on the subject. The, output of stone from the Harbour Board's quarry at Kaiwhaiki is expected to be large for some time, as, in addition to the work which the board has in hand, a large supply will soon be needed for river bank protection work. In view of this, the board has instructed its engineer to prepare an estimate for duplicating the tram-line at the quarry, and opening up a large working face. ,
