(From Our Special Correspondent.) 1 heretaunga boating club. Owing to the fact that the annual "social" of tho Heretaunga Boating Olub takes place shortly, it was ! decided to sail tho final race for the Hartley Cup on Saturday, the course being from the wharf at Petone to Somes Island, thence to Rocky Point, and past tie wharf to the buoy at the river, and back to the wharf. The first boat sent away was Moana, at 3J. p.m., Clara following at 3.2, Gil Bias at 3.3, Wai Wetu at 3.5}, Bronzewing at 3.10£, Huia and Runa at 3.11, and Spray at 3.17 p.m. Tho boats had all drawn closo up to each other at the island, and, at Rocky Point, the Runa rounded just in front of Gil Bias. As they filed past the wharf Runa led on Spray by 100 yards, followed by Gil Bias, Wai Wetu, Huia, Clara, and Bronzewing, in the order named. Tho wind, which, had been light all the way, began to fail, and tho Spray's extra length and larger spread soon began to tell, and she slowly crept up and passed Runa before reaching the river buoy on the ran back. She crossed the line at shr. Omm. 2sec., the Runa crossing four minutes later. The other boats abandoned the race, ami made for . their moorings before the wind died away altogether. . PETONE WEST SCHOOL. The Petone West School Committeo have decided to hold a bazaar, in the local Drill Hall, in July, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the piano fund. All the teachers and the wives of the committeemen have signified their willingness to advance the project. ALICETOWN AFFAIRS. It is understood that a petition - is being prepared for the signatures 'of residents in Alicetown, to be presented to the Petono Borough CouncU, asking the latter to endeavour to include Alicetown in the Petone. A considerable amount of support has been promised the movement. AMBULANCE WAGON. At a recent meeting of tho Petono Ambulance Wagon Fund Committee, Mr. Cook, Borough Engineer, submitted plans and specifications of a wagon which were approved and adopted. The secretary was instructed to call for tenders. LARGE LOAN MOOTED. Tho Hutt Valley Tramway Board has unanimously passed, a resolution, which states: "That the chairman and secretary take the necessary statutory steps at the earliest possiblo moment to place a loan proposal for the sum of £85,000 before tlie ratepayers of the district (for the purpose of installing a tramway service), at a rate of interest not greater than 4i per cent." Provision is also to be made for obtaining the money from the Government at a lower rate of interest should it be obtainable. MR. R. HOGG'S LECTURE. Mr. Robert Hogg gave an address on Sunday evening in the Victoria Street Hall on "Socialism and Labour." Mr. T. Townsend presided, and there was a very good attendance, although the night was wet.
