The Hons. Geo. Fowjds and Dr. Findlay havo cancelled all remaining engagements in connection with their Auckland visit in consequence of the death of the King. Sir. Fowlds left Auckland.for Wellington last night, and Dr. Findlay will return to-night.—Press Association. • , .

Mr. William John a. member of the fourth and eighth Now Zealand contingents, died last Wednesday afternoon. He served through Rhodesia in tho fourth contingent as quartermaster-* sergeant, seeing active service, and upxn his. return to New Zealand he joined the eighth as lieutenant. After the settlement of tho war ho took up farming in Northern Rhodesia, and also undortook some trading, being one of tho first white men to .penetrate beyond Lomagtmdi on tho Zambesi. Ho camo back to New Zealand, and entered tho Survey Department as 1 computing draughtsman at Now Plymouth, a position he held until the development of consumption forced him to ; give up active occupation.—"Taranaki Herald." Mr. G. W. Ravimhill, of Auckland, is a cousin of Baron Islington, the Gov-ernor-designato of New Zealand.

Miss Eri Thomson, tho Stowart Island vocalist, whose voice . commanded the attention of Madamo Melba at the close of last year, is at present in Oamaru, en route to London, whero Miss Thomson intends to undertake a further courso of training in voico produotion; Miss Thomson speaks in terms of the warmest gratitudo of: Madamo Melba's kindness to her wliilo in Melbourne, and of tho encouragement she received from tho groat diva. In Melbourne Miss Thomson had the great misfortune to break down in hoalth, her nerves suffering sevorely from the strain of travelling and unwonted publicity,. so that slio was unablu to tako the fullest advantage of the opportunities afforded by tho tuition of Horr Petersen and Madamo Melba. But already tho improved methods assert themselves, and Miss Thomson leaves for .England. with good reason for optimism. —Oamaru ''Mail,"
