SOUTHLAND V. CANTERBURY.
A COMPARISON.
An ex-Canterbury farmer, who now makes Southland bis home, has n great belief in and admiration for his new place of abode. Tn conversation last ■week with the travelling'-agricultural representative of the "Southland Times," the gentleman in question said: "I.know what I am. talking about. I made money fanning in the north, but. farming down here is a much better paying-concern, and I only wish that 1 had come to Southland sooner. People in the north have such poor ideas of Southlanc) that when.it was known that I was coming south I was . the object of, sympathy. But I am quite content. I will tell you tho secret. On Southland land costing i'i om .£3 10s. to ,£5 per acre I can secure as good results, both for sheep and crops as ■on .£ls per acre land in Canterbury. Wheat this year has on £5 per aero land , yielded me a return of between 30 and 40. bushels, and I did not do better than that on ,£25 per aero land in' Canterbury. Another thing is that there is no occasion to graft so hard in the south as in the north, and so life is more pleasant. Up north everyone tries to beat one another, but in Southland there is no such antagonism. ,My great surprise is that farmers in Southland, are only just commencing to realise that the land is capable of being,a great wheat-carrying country. The northerner comes down and goes in for wheat growing, and finds lie has struck it well, whilst, the older settlor is surprised. This year's wheat harvest ■ has worked out so satisfactorily that wheiit 'will" probably bo much more [largely patronised for next harvest. Yes,! I, am-.q.uite..satisfied with Southland, and nothing would induce mo.to return to a Canterbury farm."
