MAILS: THE AUCKLAND VIEW
SEVERE ON WELLINGTON. PAROCHIALISM DEPRECATED. ffir TulesrraDh.—Pn>as Ansortatloa.l Auckland, May 3. In reply to the opinions of the Wellington Chamber ot Commerce on the subject of the mail ■ service, published yesterday, Mr. Qunson (president of the Auokland Chamber of Commerce) says:— "I would say that, if the only require* meat of Wellington's interests As that the sorvice slionld be regular, then it would seem that we are not to have much support from that quarter. If a regular slow service really suits Wellington's interests well and good, but such a service will not meet Auckland's requirements, nor will it satisfy, I am snre, the needs of the rest of the Dominion. Wellington's arguments are mouldy with age. The suggestion of an up-to-date and improved mail; sen-ice via Monte Video is too absurd ■to Ire seriously discussed. Auckland requires a speedy, up-to-date, and, at the earao time, regular service, and, owing to its geographical advantages (of which nothing can rob it), it must necessarily be, for all time, the port for the Dominion at which mails crossing the Pacific will land. It is admitted that the latter route is the only feasible one for an accelerated, frequent service. I would appeal to the Wellington Chhmber to plate on one side the- paroohialism that, for- so many years, has dominated its publio questions, and operated against the accomplishment of fis> turea such as that for which we are now striving.. It must bo obvious that a servioo ivhich will pormit of mails reaching Wellington 20 hours after landing in Auokland, or, in other words, easily wilhin 29 days from london to Wellington, is immeasurably advantageous over anything at present existing.
