LYTTELTON TUNNEL.
TO CHECK THE SMOKE NUISANCE. "SOMETHING MUST BE DONE." Having in mind the smoke nuisance in connection with the Lyttelton tunnel, the Hon. J. A. Millar (Minister for Railways), whilst ,on his recent trip to. Australia, inspected an apparatus which is being successfully used to ventilate a tunnel' about forty miles from Sydney. Speaking to a. Doironox reporter yesterday,. Mr. Millar said that the tunnel in question was about a mile long on a grade of one in forty, The apparatus consisted of a sirocco fan operated by a gas engine. It had cost .£IOOO to instal, and the annual maintenance was about i! 900. By means of the apparatus the tunnel could be cleared in about two minutes. If such a plant were installed in the Lyttelton tunnel a dual fan would be required in a chamber at the centre of the tunnel. • He fancied; that such a plant could be worked at less expense in connection with the Lyttelton tunnel by operating the ,fans electrically, and placing them'Tmder'tlfe'coiitrol of the signalmen at Heathcote and Lyttelton, so that ■ the apparatus would bo in motion only when there was a train in the tunnel
"It is only a question of time," added Mr. Millar, "when something will have to be done in connection with the ventilation of Lyttelton tunnel; for in fie summer months the smoke nuisance is very bad. I have brought back full par-' ticulars in regard to the apparatus, and intend at once to discuss the matter with my officers."'
