/EKETAHUNA.

Mr. L. F. Wright, teller of the local branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has been transferred to tho bank's Westport branch. On Tuesday evening Mr. Wright was entertained by residents of the town and district at a valedictory "social," and was presented with a travelling gladstono bag, set of pipes, and a set of military brushes. A bazaar, organised by members of the local Presbyterian Church, was openeed yesterday and was well. patronised. The proceeds are likely to exceed anticipations. i There was a largo attendance at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday evening when a motion to the effect that' tho chamber disband was fully considered. It was unanimously resolved not to disband. There is now every, indication that the institution will take a new lease of life.

At the annual meeting of St. Cuthbertfs Church, officers were elected as follow:— Vicar's churchwarden, Mr. A. J. Bray; people's churchwarden, Mr.-J. S.- Tripe; vestrymen, Messts. T. Moss, J. J. Mead, A. Small; G. Jesson, W. Summers, A. R. Power, R. G. Vile, N. C. Davidson, Dunderdale, E. B. Evans, F. E. Flenry, S. J. F..,Heckler, J. Hare, and m H. E. Mowbray; auditors, Messrs. G. T. Allen and G. J. Jackson.

CARTERTON.

Carterton is in a rather unique position for a small town, inasmuch as it possesses two town clocks. Both of them have a certain history attached to them apart from their usefulness. One, which at present is fixed in the municipal buildings, was given to the town many years ago by Sir Charles' Booking Carter, from whom, by the way, the town derived its name. It was once a great public convenience, but of late has not been of much value, duo tri: the neiv four-faced chiming clock, which is fixed' in the Post Office, tower. This clock was presented to the town by the united'efforts' of the-l'nendljv Societies) assisted by a Government subsid'y. 'Some time ago a suggestion was made that the small clock should be removed to the south end of tho town, and'the idea suggested' was to erect it at tbeHigh School. So. far nothing has been announced in connection with the matter, and of late tho timepiece has been allowed to run down. Consequently, in its present state, it ia liable to bo misleading at a certain time of-the day. If the proposalto remove it could bo given effect to its value would ,be greatly enhanced, for, having as it does a certain amount of history, it would bo an item of education to the juveniles, in addition to being a public convenience. At present it is nothing beyond an ornament. it is tjw intention of the Carterton Hockey.Club to enter a-senior, and junior team ih the championship contests. There is somo'mention,of a.team being entered from Dalefield, but if this does not happen the local club will enter another .junior team. Dalefield has a good football team, and tho material is als* theit> for a good hockey club. ' The; local Public Library is one of the many, country institutions that the Government's stoppage of'subsidy to libraries has entailed soino hardship upon. As a consequence the usual order to London for books this year lapsed. Mr. W. G. Buchanan, M.P., has been asked, and has promised, to endeavour to have the subsidies reinstated. At the annual meeting of subscribers a resolution was carried expressing regret at the stoppage of the subsidy, and- also a hope that it would be speedily restored.
