A steamer from Noumea (capital of New Caledonia) brings news that the cyclone which swept New Caledonia at the. end of last month wrought great devastation in the Loyalty Islands, a group east of New Caledonia. It was particularly severe at Mare Island (also known as Britannia, and Nengone), the southernmost of the group. At Mare Island three tidal waves in succession swept far up over the land, destroying trees and plantations. Every trader's house, excepting onel was destroyed. The huts of the natives were blown bodily away, and hundreds of natives took refuge in the: caves. AH their plantations are destroyed,' and they are left almost withont food. The other islands in, the Loyalty group also suffered. A ketch arrived at Noumea from Mare Island on April 7 with tidings of the disaster. It was proposed to dispatch a French warship from Noumea with food and clothing for the unfortunate islanders.

The ketch Arthur, which left Noumea for Mare Island on March 28, is missing.
