MOISTURE IN BUTTER.
A VICTORIAN PARCEL. AN IMPORTING FIRM FINED IN LONDON. Br Telecraph—Proas Association—Copyright (Rec. April 10, 5 p.m.) London, April 9. The Commissioner of Customs, proses cuted Messrs. Ellis, Kislingbury, nnd Company for importing, ex Omrah, 33 cwt. of Victorian butter containing 18.2 per cent, of water. Defendants pleaded that the Victorian Government's certificate did not mention any excess of water. They regarded the certificates as practically Government guarantees. . .. ■ • ■ The magistrate at Tower Bridge; in imposing a fine of 405.,' said: "The people who inspected this butter before shipment ought to be before me." [The limit of moisture allowed by law in Britain for butter is 16 per, cent.]
