LADIES' HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

In presenting the annual report, the committee of the .Wellington Ladies' Hockey Association congratulates members on the success of last season. Mention is made'that there were five senior, thirteen junior, and seven third-class teams in championship matches last year; as compared . with' live senior, twelve junior, and, thirteen third-class teams in 1908. The championships were '.von by Victoria College, Uregg A, and Bosenoath respectively, -the runners up being Hineinoa, St. John's'A, and Victoria College' A (tie), and Celtib B. The championship tournament, held at Napier. s in August, at which AVcllington was represented, was won • by Rawke's Bay, which retains tho Senior Cup. The junior contest'was. not held, there-not being enough entries! Ho other representative matches were played during ; the' season, projected, matches with Christchnrch .and . Horb-' whemia Association. falling through owing to the lateness of the season',' which was protracted on account, of much wet weather. . Use of the men's grounds at Day's Bay "proved" a ■ great advantage in every way. Tho financial position of the association is. considered sound, the credit |,balance- being,. £i '. 19s. Bd. It ■is .stated, 'that clubs must in the , coming -season face ' the . problem of increasing the income. Thanks were due to Dr. Holmes and. Messrs.' Organ, Pearson,. and Tripe, for donations, and to Mrs. de la Mare, who chaperoned the team to Napier, arid to the various gentlemen who assisted as referees during the season. The committee recorded with regret , the death'r'-V Mrs. T. W.'.Hislo'p, who was .unanimously elected president at the last annual meeting. ' ■'■.'.

Lord- Plunket haa :a pleasant- little story, to take Home with him' concerning the' position accorded to women in New Zealand. Speaking at the \ farewell dinner given in his. honour, at Waimato, his Excellency said-he had to. congratulate those' who were responsible for the arranging of this little function. Waimato had beaten most, of the.other places ho had visited, inasmuch as ther bad tho ladies present. (Applause.) Ho then related a little anecdote of a place he had recently visited,, where, at tie dinner, all the gentlemen were placed at one end of the room, ■ and all the ladcis were kept at the back. This,, said his Excellency, was a little refreshing memory that ho would.reserve for uso against his friends at Home when discussing the suffragette movement. - He , would-be- able. to tell them how they still treated tho ladies in a, far-off dear little country across tho seas. (Applause.) v
