THE MATRICULATION STANDARD.
" Sir,—As there : is. a rumour that the University. Senate intend to consider the point of raising.; the. matriculation stand-, ard, I would like to offer'.my opinioii on, the subject. , I . think it' is very unfair; that, the, standard should bo raised any; higher. ,-It is. quit® '• hard : enough . and' in fact too hard, at. the. 'present time/. The Latin paper should be lowered, when included as a subject. I think the choice should remain as it is at present or softened a little. Tho 'only reason that I can see for raising the : standard is that professors and other- teachers may gairi. more, fees for longer coaching. '.Why.'.is the present generation' deteriorating?Answer—"Too much cramming' and study." Keduce the cramming and'hard, study and increase, the physique of our. boys and girls.—l am,' etc., " . i ■ ' PBOFESSQE. Wanganui, January 26. .
