THE DOCK.
■ Six,—l notice, that an engineer is said to havo "offered to settle the dock construction problem." We have.been told, that the board's engineer has been for , some months .' experiments with concrete, but apparently : ne, is,-, now , no , nearer success than when he .first: started. It, was suggested: recently to construct a coffer-dam round the .dock. The words are .simple,, but; is:it generally . known .•that they mean an,additional cost of some-.' thing between . ,£50,000- and " .£IOO,OOO ? With the finances, of the ibqard 'in .the flourishing condition that they appear to, be,..this additional cost .is only a circum-. . stance. . Judging by recent disclosures, our; former, engineer, "was 1 not: infallible. I understand ho planned this dock to be birnt without a coffer-dam. Why does he not offer a solution of the present difficulty?, Might it not be advisable before spending an additional .£IOO,OOO to give an expert. engineer.,an opportunity of testing hia. method. w : ays of overcoming , laitance' are known.—l ■ am, 1 etc.,•;.. JOHN iBISHOP. Wellington, January 28.
