MASTERTON. The annual "meeting".',of the' Masterton Branch of the New Zealand Veterans' Allionco was held on Saturday night. Mr. >W. Cullen was olected vice-president, Mr. Woods secretary, and Mr. Studolph delegate to .the annual conference of New Zealand Veterans at Wellington. Three now members were elected. ...
Tho annual report of the Wairarapa Swimming Club states that the club is in a good financial position," having a credit balance of over £5. Members had not taken as much, interest in tho affairs of tho club as in previous years. It had been a bad ■ season ■ for swimming however, and thero had consequently. Wen some excuse for tho comparatively small i&erest shown. The Tcport also expressed regret at.the fact that Dr. Hosking, captain'of tho club, was leaving . tho Dominion. » .'■■.
The monthly meeting of ■ the managers of tho Masterton Technical School was held on Friday .' evening.' Mombers present were: Messrs. E. Feist (chairman), W: H. Jackson, E. H. Wnddiugton, C. E. Daniell; and Very Rev. Dean M'Kcnna. The treasurer's statement showed the receipts for the, month (including a balanco at last meeting' of 10s.. 3d.) to be £147.155: 2d., made'up as follows:— Capitation on tho first term . of' the wool classes, £14 18s.;'fees for the second term, £10 10s.; capitation for first term in 1909/.JE49 10s.3d.; second instalment of trust, grant, £33 Gs. Bd..' The expenditure for the month, totalled £26 13s. 7d., leaving a credit balance to date of £121 Is. 7d. The roll number during the second term had been 273, which, with.' 28 attending' the 'wool classes, brought' the total up to 301. . Tli'o secretary reported that he 'ascertained from Mr. S. Wood, (wool classes instructor) that he did not consider, that it was advisable to hold an examination at the end of this term. It was decided to ascertain how many students wore likely to present, themselves in the event of'an examination being, held.
In view of the fact that the auctioneers have decided to remove' the saleyards to the other, end of the town, viz., Solway, a large numben of/settlers are of the opinion ' that a • stock bridge should he''erected over the ' Waipoua Kiver, at the Colombo Road. crossing: It has, also beon. suggested that the timber from the present Waipoua bridges, which are.to be rebuilt;' might 'be utilised for; the purpose of constructing . such a. Stock : bridge, - but ■ the' County • Council, sci far, • has not. been able to see its way to movo in the matter. The local; Chamber'of Commerce is interesting itself in, the question, and it has decided to write to the A.' and P. Gibb, Government Inspector under the, Apiaries Act, has just finished a visit to Feilding. Ho made an ' examination' of' the various hives in the district, and, in a great many cases, ho found diseased bees, and ordored the hives to be destroyed or cleaned; . A' number of box-hives'were ordered to be done away.with, and tho .regulation frame, hives' used. In a case where a bee-keeper had sold a diseased 6warm to a novice, the monoy was 'ofdered to-be returned. As a result, of-Mr, Gibb's visit, a number of bee-keepers are getting'rid of their present-swarms, and importing Italian bees. /Members of the physical drill squad of the Manchester Bides are now in training with a view to the competitions which are to-be hold at the military -tournament at Palmerston North on -November; .91..
