Devenport, and owned by Mr. Malcolm Newrick. Mr. Devenport was the'sole occupier of the house lost night, the •rest ■of the family staying, at ..Napier. The brigade were hampered by the refusal of a 1 driver I. to harness horses to the steamer engine, and tho 'steamer had'to" be "drawn by hand. The now chemical' engine, however,, was liuickly. on the spot, and succeeded in saving an'adjoining house. Tho, steamer ran out over a tliousnnd feet of hose from .the school bath, but tho . building was completely destroyed;. Tho insurances weiuas follow:—On the furniture, ~£lsO in. tho Australian Allianco Office;'on. the building, £200 in tho Norwich Union Office. Tho occupier estimates his loss at over the insurance, this loss including a quantity of medicines for which ho held patent rights. Mr. Newrick (the owner). calculates his loss as .£IOO over tho insurance. Tho cause of tho fire is unknown, but it is thought that it was duo. to a faulty chimney." At the' Police Court to-day, before Messrs. L. D. Fraser and David Whytc, jun., J.P.'s, Arthur Dow, charged with improper language, pleaded drunkenness as an excuse. He was fined £o, with the alternative of one month's imprisonment. Annie Johnson, charged with being an idlo and disorderly person,was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. The first consignment of wool for the season came in to-day from Twyford Station.
