MOTOR-CARS AND DEFENCE.
A SUGGESTION. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Cftristchurch, August 10. An interesting suggestion was brought up at the annual meeting of the Automobile As-, sbeiation- last night by Colonel. Smith, M;Ii.C., 'who ; said lie felt sure all motorists were as anxious as any other class in the community to contribute to the defence of their country if the necessity should arise. He referred to the notable achievement in England a' few months , ago when_ private motorists, placed their cars at the disposal, of tihe War Office authorities and conveyed several thousand troops from" London to Hastings in-surprisingly, quick time! . Something of the same sort was ■ to be-attempted at' Wellington, and he suggested 'that the Canterbury.' Association should make a, similar, offer to Colonel Hawkins to enable'him to. carry out a manoeuvre of. the kind referred to., A large number of those present expressed their willingness to place .their cars and their own services at the disposal of the volunteer authorities, and the proposal was most cordially received. A suggestion was made by a motorist that on one 'day of tlje year the members should combing to rive a run intoithe country to tho orphan children of the district. The president said members would be proud to carry out such a proposal. "We might also hold a magistrate's and police'day,'" he added. (Laughter.)
