THE DEFENCE FORCES.

CENERAL ORDERS! In General Orders by tho Now ; Zealand Council of Defence, tho official results of tho examinations for promotion of officers of tho Permanent Stall', and of tho Permanent Force, aro announced. These have already \ been published in Tire Dominion. •In a note appended to tho results, ' it is remarked: "Taken generally, and considering tho limited opportunities for practical work in the field, tho result may well bq considered satisfactory. "It is expected that officers who pass such examinations will uso and pass on the ktiowledgo they have gained whilo studying for and undergoing tho examination; it cannot but provo of value and assistance to other officers in .tho district. A general criticism on tho papers will be sent to officers commanding districts as a guide for other officers coming forward for similar examinations;"

An examination in subjects "C," "D," "E," and "I I'," for officers of tho Permanent Staff and Permanent Force, will be hold during the months of May and November respectively. Candidates for examination to apply through : their . commanding officers. The subject "Military History" • will bo taken. History will bo taken' from "Stonewall Jackson," by Colonel Henderson, vol. 1, for special campaign, both volumes, for general -Candidates are advised to also study the book "Small Wars, their Principles, and Practice," third edition, 1906, by Colonel C. E. Callwell.
