ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES. .

FATAL COLLISION IN ARO STREET. An inquest was held at the'hospital yesterday afternoon by Mr. W. 6. Riddell, S.M., concerning the death of Georgo Ernest Murray, who died yesterday morning as the result of injuries sustained in a collision with a trap whilst cycling along Aro Street on Saturday morning. ' Chas. Murray, machinist, brother of deceased, stated that his brother was a storeman, aged 29. Witness last saw deceased at about 10.30 on Saturday morning, when he was mounting his bicycle preparatory to delivering somo books in Aro Street. Witness and his brother each had a holiday ill order' to help the family to shift. George Bradley, expressman,, stated that he was in Aro Street with his express at about 10.45 on Saturday morning. The express was drawn up alongside the footpath outside a house at which witness, had been making an inquiry as to an address. Witness was just about ; to start the horse when Murray, who was on a bicycle, passed the express from behindhand struck the horse's head with his shoulder, falling heavily to the ground. The man never moved after the fall. He was carried into a residence close by, and, on tho arrival of Dr. Boyd, was removed to tho hospital. Witness could not account for tho accident in any way. Dr. Brown, house surgeon at the hospital, deposed that Murray was brought in about 11.30 a.m. on Saturday suffering from con-' eussion and compression of tho brain, also a broken collarbone.. He ...was unconscious. His condition gradually became worse, and he died at 2.30, a.m. on Monday, without regain-, ing his senses.: The cause of death wa3 hemorrhage into and around the brain, causing compression. JohniMeston also gave evidence. A verdict was returned_ that, death was due to hemorrhage of the brain, caused by an accidental fall from a ,hicycle; in Aro Street. A young lady and her brother were walking along Purakanui beach this afternoon when they observed a headless .body close to the shore.. The body was dre«sedin a _ blue jersey and dark trousers. They immediately returned to Dunedih. and communicated with tho police, who will go out to the locality to make a search in the morning.

• . A FEVER-STRICKEN HOME. . ; :. Dunedin, April 19. 'A few weeks ago three members' of one family at Green Island, Mrs. Pastier, and.her two daughters, were attacked with ■ scarlet .fever, and, it makes sad* reading to record the death of two of them, alid also of the nurse who attended the family. The mother fell a victim to the disease a: short time ago, and the other day the two daughters were; removed to the Infectious Diseases Hospital. The case of Florence Margaret, a promising girl ,of seventeen, was regarded as hopeless from the first, and she died yesterday. The nurse (Miss Riobertson) also contracted fever, and passed away yesterday. The other Miss Fastier' is making good progress, and good hope is entertained for her recovery. . ! . THROWN FROM A TRAP. 1 ;' Palmerston North, April 19. An'accident happened near the Palmerston North post office on Saturday to-Miss Stubbs, of Kairanga,' which, though of a painful nature;' was lucluly not attended by the serious consequences which at first seemed inevitable. Miss Stubbs was driving a young horse through the Square, when'the noise of an approaching train frightened the animal, the result being that Miss Stubbs was thrown out of the trap, and fell heavily on her head. Dr. Putnam was called, and ordered her re-' movahto Mrs, Freeman's Hospital, where an examination disclosed rather severe scalp wounds,, but -there were no' further injuries. Inquiry this morning elicited the information that Miss Stubbs was progressing towards recovery, and hopod to leave the hospital before the end of . the week. ~ - ; >■ ; . BADLY HURT BY A HORSE. ; ■ / Tafhape, April. 19. ■ A serious accident occurred to Norman Gowdy, aged nine years, a son of a Ruanui settler, yesterday. He. was. bucked' off a horse and failed to'clear the ,stirrup iron, lie horse kicked him into the air, fracturing his skull seriously. The boy was brought'in this morning, about a distance' ,of fifteen miles, and sent to Wanganui'Hospital. He has not regained consciousness. :.' TRAGIC DEATH. V '-. " ; Auckland, April 19. Alfred Smith, aged 57,'. residing with a ,friend at Mount.Eden, was found in his bedroom staggering with/a gash, in his throat from , ear to ear. He.died just as a doctor arrived; . ACCIDENT TO A CYCLIST. - Christchurch, April 19. -In conneotion,with the accident to James Smart,, of Barbadoes Street, on Saturday evening, the police state that the occurrence took placo through Smart colliding with, a cart driven by a man named Edward Wright, employed by his father, a manufacturer or aerated' water. Wright states that .he' was driving along Barbadoes S Street' at about 6.30, and was on his right side, with lamps burning,; on the cart. A man shot out from Hereford Street on a bicycle arid ran between tho horse's legs: The wheel-of the cart passed over him, and the horse received a fright and dashed down the road for about a chain before he could pull it up. On going . back he found that Smart did not seem to be very badly hurt. He was able to give his name. Ho was then placed in a -cab and taken to his home.. !fhe injured man is progressing favourably at the hospital. 1
