RIVAL TENDERS.

. v THE TOWN CLEEK EXPLAINS. In reference to the oircular issued by Messrs. E. 0. Clark, Ltd., drainpipe, brick, and tile -makers, published in yesterday's Dominion, concerning .the'action of the City Counoil in accepting a tender for the twelve months' supply of sanitary drain pipes, the town clerk (Mr. J. E. Palmer) has handed the following reply to a Dominion reporter, "Under the heading of 'Eival .Tenders,' you refer to the acceptance by the City Council of the tender of Messrs. P. Hutson arid Company, for sanitary drain pipes, as ncit-being the lowest reoeived. The statement is .perfectly correct, the reason being that the accepted tender was recommended as offering the most suitable pipe, this suitability having been carefully ascertained by the city engineer in making his recommendation to the council.. Apart from this, even if the pipes of the different tenderers had been considered of equal value, there is the great'disadvantage that, Messrs. Clark, of Auckland, whose tender was not accepted, and who are complaining, havo no depot in the city from which the pipes could be .readily obtained. This'would )je a great inconvenience, arid ~tho cause of serious delay to the City Council in carrying out its works. The contract has been signed." , .
