MR. ARNOLD TROWELL.

SUCCESS OF A WELLINGTON 'CELLIST. In a letter received by Mr. V. E. Tomlinson, of Wellington, from Mr. Thos. Trowell, sen., father of Mr. Arnold Trowell, the talented t'cellist, writing from Liverpool, says:— "You will bo glad to hear of Tom's (Arnold's) great trial on tho first of tho month (March) at Liverpool, when ho played his greatest work with' the Liverpool Symphony Orchestra (which is one of the best in Europe) with the most complete success, being recalled ten times (encores not allowed), even tho orchestra cheering him to tho echo." Tho. "Liverpool Courier," referring to the eoncort Mr. Trowell mentions, says:— 'Tho ranks of present-day solo violoncellists have been notably strengthened by tho entrance of a young player in tho person of Mr. Arnold who mado his first appearance at a concert of tho Symphony Orchestra last night, although it was not his first visit to this city. _ After his recital at the Philharmonic Hall in tho early part of the season wo were prepared for nn unusually high standard of playing, and this was fully maintained in his solos last night. _ There is a sense of tho keenest artistic feeling about all his work, added to a refinement and chastcnoss of stylo which mark him as a player with lofty aims 'and earnest purpose. One is struck with tho almost indescribable, purity and sweetness of his tone, which comes off his instrument without any suspicion of effort, and many of tho passages last night were played with astonishing beauty, his finesse, both in bowing and fingering, enabling him to pass from the bolder to tho delicate shades of colour with consummate ease and srnoothuess."
