CIVIL SERVANTS HONOURED,

PRESENTATIONS Bi r ROADS DEPART. - MENT. Members of (ho Roads Department, to tho number of about 50, held a dinner at tho Hotel Windsor last evening, to do honour to Mr. C. W. Hurst'liouso, ongiiiecr-iii-chief, and Mr. G. P. Robinson, district engineer, Who aro both retiring under tho Superannuation Act. Mr. W. S. Short, chief clerk of tho Department, presided, and tho Hon. A. AV. Hogg, Minister for Roads and Bridges, and Hon. J. Carroll, Minister for Native Affairs, were present! Afler the toast of (ho lving had been honoured, tho Hon. A. AV. Hogg, presented Mr. Uursthouso with a 'purse of sovereigns, subscribed by tho officers of tho Department throughout New /.calami. Ho referred in detail to Mr. Hursthouse's long career in tho Service, and extolled his character and ability as an officer. Tho chairman, and Messrs. A. B. and P. , Wither, district engineers, referred appreciatively to Mr. Hursthouso, who suitably returned thanks. Mr. AV. Nathan, acting-district road engineer for Nelson, who is filling Air. Hursthouse's place in tho meantime, ashed the Hon. A. A\ T . Hogg to present Mr. Jtobinson with an illumi-nated-address, prepared by tho AVellingtau district staff. The address was presented by Mr. Hogg, with remarks of appreciation, which were endorsed by tho chairnian and other speakers.

Tho toast of "Tho Ministry" was proposed by Mr. H. H. Iteancy, and responded to by tho Hon. J. Carroll in his best manner. Mr. G. F. Robinson proposed "Tho Roads Department," to whieli tho chairman responded "Backblocks Settlers" was proposed by Mr. G. I. Murray, and replied to by tho Bon. A. W. Horr. . Songs and other musical items were Riven by tho Ifon. J. Carroll, Messrs. J. D. Trent, H, Seymour, and I', Mueller.
