A COMPLAINT FROM THE WHARF.
Sir,—Through your columns I wish to draw attention to what may appear to bo a minor grievance, but which is indeed a cause of much annoyance, to tho public in general. It is in the berthing of small coastal steamers about tho cntranco u) the Queen's wharf. One of these in particular •is tho Queen of the South. When in port this vessel is invariably placed at No. 11 north. She has a small engine on her deck which issues a volume of filthy smoke. This smoko is usually blown southward, causing a continuous cloud of soot and dirt to drift acrose the mam entrance to the wharves. This is really an abomination, and is much resented by tho passers to and fro. I simplv ask that tho Harbour Board officials use a little mora discretion m the berthing of vessels—l am etc., ' SMOKE. [Captain Johnston, Harbourmaster at Wellington, when shown the above had littlo to say. Ho stated that tho wharf was not a recreation ground or a pleasure resort. Any steamer at work required steam to _ propel tho engines, and tho alleged nuisance was unavoidable.]
