BRITAIN AMD GERMANY.
. Sjr,—Please allow mo a few words in reply to our divergent letters I have been reading m his Dominion of Saturday last, dealing with tho building of battleships by Germany, and tho danger to England in consequence. ino'v, as 1 know Germany and its people, in fact I was one of them, hence mv letter. In the hrst place, it was a mistake, a great mistake, in offering a battleship to England, iho best sorvico wo could render England would bo to tram all our men to arms and strengthen our defences, because in tho event of war wo would havo to depend on ourselves, and tho price of a battleship would go a long way towards tho abovo. Secondly, Germany does not want to invade England or any of her colonies. All she wants "is to trade with other nations, and a fleet to protect that trade. Please recall tho war between France and Germany in 1870 and 1871 l'ranco had a fleet and blockaded every port, and German trade was at a standstill, and would have ruined her in tho end if tho war had- lasted longer. A Mr. Walton, in one of your letters, advocates boycott of German goods. That would be equivalent to a declaration of war by England against Germany. Trade and industry are the very life of Germany. Stop her at that and sh'o will use force, and you may bo sure sho will break through if sho can. Thcro will surelv como a timo when tho hordes of Asia wiil jry to bo master of the Pacific, and England will bo glad that Germany has a fleet, so that they will .be ablo to havo another Waterloo sido by side against tho Asiatic. Iho time will surely come.—l am, etc., , r • „„ ' CLAREVILLE. ■ March 29.
