THE TURF.

[By Glencoe/] 5 REMINDER. In connection with the Autumn meeting of the Masterton Racing Club, owners aregiven a filial reminder that acceptances for the first day's events and entries for tho Maiden Hack Race- close at half-past nino o'clock this evening with the secretary, Mr. A. Hathaway.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. Tho Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting will bo concluded to-day, tho principal event to bo decided being tho Paid Memorial Handicap, one mile and a distance. A coincidence in connection with tho racing at Now Plymouth yesterday was tho fact that Speciosa and Karcroa, who won tho first two races, were successful in the same events last- year, and Mahuta, who acted as runner-up to Waitapu in tho Cup, filled a similar position behind Uhlando last autumn. Ecarte, who won tho Rosewill Handicap at Timaru yesterday, is a half-sister to the Kilcheran colt that "was sold for 350 guineas at the Waikanao sale in January. Accommodation has been booked at Riccarton for seven of tho Hon. J. D. Ormond's horses that will be competing at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn, meeting. Progeny of Finland havo now won the Timaru Cup -two years in succession—Lapland last year, and Tikitero this year. Both winners are owned by the Canterbury sportsman, Mr. H. A. Knight. .On Monday last, tho Southland Racing Club was ablo to pay the last amount of £1000 to tho guarantors of tho racecourse, and tho club now stands in tho happy position of having its property (worth sonio £4000) unencumbered. On the second day of tho Wanganni Cup meeting, Clemora was heavily backed for tno Matarawa Hack Race, but ho failed to run first or second. Undaunted by the dofcat, the connections of tho St. Clements colt backed him again at tho Taranaki meeting yosterday, and this timo ho managed to win. Ho was quite an outsider on the course, and his party in consequence had a royal win. There has recently been placed in work at Riccarton a three-year-old sister, by Pilgrim's Progress, to Sir Geo. Clifford's good horso Treadmill. It. is understood that tho Masterton trainer, M. M'Grath, had made up his mind some timo ago to tako Tumut and Osiris to Riccarton at the conclusion of the Masterton meeting next week, but whether ho has altered his plans sinco tho appearance of the weights is another question. Tikitero, winner of tho Timaru Cup, is a half-sister to Suttee, who had a meteoric career last summer, winning six races in as many weeks and afterwards meeting with fatal injuries in a race at tho Dunedin Cup meeting. Tikitero came into prominence this season by running third in a welter race at Timaru in November, and winning tho Stewards' Handicap on tho second day of tho samo fixture. She afterwards won tho Dominion Handicap, ono milo and a quarter, at the Christchurch Racing Club's summer meeting, and also gained placo monoy at Wingatui in December, and at Riccarton in February.

Writing from memory, Pawa, Maui, Ruabon, and Ataahua wero tlio first four Mahakis that woro ever raced over hurdles, and all showed uncommon ability at the game. This would naturally lead to tho belief that Mahaki was going to provo a great sire of jumpers, and, in Waimaria, by Mahaki from Mclinito (winner of tho Great Northern Hurdles), one- would expect a first flighter. So far, however, Waimaria, though ho lias enjoyed a reputation sinco tho spring, lias quite failed to justify it. Ho may get on tho winning list any day, but his recent performances do not suggest that ho will over develop into a champion.

Waitapu, winner of tho Taranaki Cup, has during his- four seasons on tho turf won twelvo races, and his total winnings in stakes arp now mounting the scalo towards £2000 His only previous Cup victory was achieved at Daimevirko last year, but 'he won several good handicap events last season. A rather remarkable featuro of his careor is the fact that eight of tho twelvo races which ho has won havo been second-day ovents. Produced tor tho present season in November last, ho has taken a long time to striko form, but, a i s ii IS i'? ot ,Khup in the handicaps, ho should add to his winning account before tho season closes.

Astraea, who won tho Kaitako Handicap at New Plymouth raced right through last season without registering a win, but tho full sister to Gleam has been performing consistently this season, and at tho present time she is said to bo locking exceptionally well. The dearth of good lightweight jockeys in Australia at the present time is by many atS ff° con, P«™tiwly few opportunities afforded apprentices for exhibiting their skill. It has been suggested that there are numerous useful light riders in tho largo stables in Australia, who, becauso they aro constantly passed over for tho crack lightweights, never got a chance to gain tho experience which might place them in the position of earning a decent income This is no doubt one of tho reasons why suitable lads aro not offering for racing stables.' Anxious to improve tho present condition of affairs, tho New South Wales Owners', Trainersana iireeders Association is moving in tho direction of having special races introduced tor apprentices, m which crack/riders like young Piko would be penalised or barred. The Australian Jockey Club authorities are to bo approached on tho question, and if they cannot see their way to do something in the matter, tho suburban clubs havo promised to place races of this description on their lirogramines.

(BT TELEOniPH-srECIAL. CORRESPONDENT.) New Plymouth, March 24. bplendid weather prevailed for the Taranaki Cup meeting to-day, and tho racing, which was witnessed by a record attendance', was very good. Vasa delayed tho start of tho Cup race, but, eventually, all but Chanteuse and Kilmarnock moved off to an even start. Chanteuso at onco pulled up and re-turned-to tho paddock, whero it was discovered that her noso was badly split, having been struck by tho starting gear. Mahuta and Whetumarama set a groat paco over tho first six furlongs. Passing tho stand tho first time tho positions wero Whetumarama. Mahuta, Taitoko, • Waitapu, and Tan San. With three furlongs to go, Waitapu displaced Taitoko for third position, but the order of the others was unchanged. Whetumarama was beaten shortly after tho straight was reached, and Mahuta was then challenged by Waitapu, who went on and won by four lengths. Belario camo with a great run at tho finish, and just headed Taitoko for third position. Kilmarnock was a hundred yards away last. Waikaraka had a very easy win in the Plying Handicap, but tho way was paved for his victory by tho barrier acting badly at one end. Moriarty, who was made a very, hot favourite, was loft standing, as was Golden Eagle. Preovata, one of tho starters in tho Pukaka Hack race, camo with a great reputation from Auckland, but ho got chopped out at tho start and fell back to last. He put in. a sensational run at the finish, and was close up fourth. Astraea'led from start to finish in tho Kaitako Handicap. Coronetted, who showed good form at Hawora last month, has troublesomo hocks, and was unablo to act on the sharp turns. In tho Hack Scurry, Clemency and Te Wakaroa wero evenly-backed favouritics, and nothing else had a chance with this pair. Only ono actual favourite prevailed during tho day.
