' ; Auckland, December -10. - Tho question of having to pay duty on ma- : qhinery imported into Auckland for use at Calliope Dock is a serious matter, as' tho amount entailed' on such large purchases i§ of some consequence. Heretofore the practice has been to charge the duty and then for the Government'to romit the amount. At tho meeting of the Board this afternoon, however, a letter was read from the Collector of Customs, Auckland, notifying that tho Cabinet had decided not placo any more sums . on the. estimates for refunds of duty on machinery, etc., imported for Calliope Dock. Tiie £102 appearing in the appropriations for tho present financial year must'bo regarded as final. Mr. Mills also wrote with regard to another claim'sent by the Board for the refund of £200 on two turntables for the equipment of Calliope Dock,' that' tho application had not been favourably received, ; and lie was instructed by the 1 Secretary of Cus•tpnis to refer tho Board to the abovo menVo. The letter was referred to the Board'in com.imttee.
