November 29. smoke emitted from the chimney of tlie Corporation's power houso in Cumberland Street is discolouring First Church and doing other damage, so the kirk people
say, and there is something in their complaint. .Months ago I was asked to note the accumulation of dust upon the seats, and it was then said that the deposit amounted to as much as a spoonful per pew per week. The deacons' court now asks the Corporation to pay for the damage, and ii committee has heen appointed to go into the matter witii the church representatives. There are five bands belonging to Dunedin, Each is to receive an equal share of the £150 subsidy generously voted by tlio City Council. In July of 1905, Allan Garth MacGregor, employed by Sargood, Son, and Ewen, went up in the evening to the Roslyn residenco of. Mr. W. E. Sargood, a member of tlio linn, and asked to see Mr. Sargood. That gentleman rose from dinner, met MacGregor in the hall, and showed him into the sittingroom, whereupon MacGregor dreiv a revolver and lired, the bullet going through Mr. Sargood's cheek. A trial for attempted murder followed. Tlio jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the ground of insanity, and MacGregor was ordered to bo imprisoned in gaol during the pleasure of the Colonial Secretary. Since then MacGregor has been contined in the Duncdin gaol, from which ho was set free yesterday morning. Mr. W. E. Sargood is now a resident of Australia.
