HIGH COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE.

A return which has been laid upon'tho table of the Legislative Council, on the motion of the Hon. T. Kennedy Macdonald, givos particulars of the staff and salaries of the High Commissioner's office in . London. The staff consists of 28 members, and tho three highest salaries are those' of the High Commissioner, £2000 a year; Mr.. W. Kennaway, £800; and Mr. H. C. Cameron, £425. It is stated that five of the members of the staff, exclusive of the High Commissioner, have been in New Zealand. The total cost of the High Commissioner's office, including salary of High Commissioner, and any allowances or otherwise paid to him, including travelling expenses, for tho year ended March 31, 1907, is set down as £9032. Mr. Macdonald intends to pursue the subject further. He is of opinion that the officers in question should have a personal knowledge of the Dominion, and that there should be a rotation of officers between Wellington and London. He also suggested that the oftico should be removed from Westminster to the City of London, and that the High Commissionership should not ho held by one gentleman for a longer period than five years. Mr. Macdonald will ask tho Council to affirm theso views, and he has given notice of motion accordingly.
