Philosophical Institute.

ANNUAL MEETING. The largely-attended yearly meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Institute on Wednesday adopted a satisfactory annual-report, and elected now 'officers in accordance ivith the list recommended by the Council, without "discussion or criticism. The report stated that wmlo there had begn a falling oil in the number of original contributions, the attendances had been gratifyJHgy large. It had been found impracticable to arrange for popular lectures as in previous sessions, but it was hoped to give one or more good lectures nextwinter. The total membership on the rpll was 103. The Council recorded its extreme satisfaction at the recent decision of the Government to. initiate botanical surveys in certain parts of the country, and to grant facilities .(or a scientific expedition to the outlyijig islands to tho south. Valuable result* ■to scieuce should follow this determination. ■The balance-sheet showed, receipts, *141 /s.. 10d., and expenditure, ,£94 Iv , leaving, a credit balance of £U Is. 2d. The addition of a fixed' deposit in the bank on account of'the research fund brought-the total funds in hand t0.£90 13s. lid. ■ Tlie new officers are as follows •— .President, Professor H. B. Ivirk; Vic*. Presidents, Messrs. G. V. Hudson and A. Hamilton; Council, Messrs. C. 13 Adams, 13.5 c., J. W. Paynton, T. W. ir*i and Martin Chapman, h.C., Dr.s. A. K. Newman and J. M. Bell, and Professor T. 11;• Easterfield; secretary and Treasurer, Mr. Thomas •kiNoJ Auditors, Mr. E. A. Dymock, A.1.A., N.Z. The Chairman (Professor Kirk) stated that-Pi-ofcssov Maurice W. Richmond had been elected a- member of the Institute, and Professor Easterfield and Mi*. Martin Chapman, lv.C., 1 had beea re-plected to the' Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute. Tho following papers were read:— The Protective Powers of the Blood (illustrated with miscrocopie preparations), by Dr. C. Monro • Hector, and Preliminary Note on a Metaphvsical Hypothesis," by Professor Maurice W. Richmond. The contributions were of a highly interesting nature, and the authors received hearty acknowledgment of their merit.

Mr. R. C. Harding exhibited an early number of the "Pharmaceutical Journal," containing woodcuts of a Chinese vegetable caterpillar.
