BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Milton, on Tuesday last. There were present : Messrs Henry Clark (Chairman), Murray, Robertson, Wayne, and Petrie. The minutes of last ordinary and a special meeting were read and confirmed. The inward and outward correspondence since last meeting was read and approved of. .' A circular was read from.. the Tuapeka County Council suggesting that stops should be taken during noxt session of Assembly for having all reserves within Counties vested in the County Councils. On the motion of Mr Murray, seconded by Mr Robertson, it was agreed that the subject should be referred to the Conference of ' County Councils to meet in Wellington in July. The following letter was read from the Under-Secretary for Crown Lands :— " I have Uie honour, by direction of the Hon. Minister for Lands, to acknowledge the receipt ' of your letter of the 24th "ultimo, requesting that the Tualdtoto and Kaitangata Lakes be vested in the Bruce County Council, in order that works, may be undertaken by the Council to lessen the damage caused by the'overflowing of, those lakes during floods. —In reply, I have to inform you that a special Act of the.Legis- i lature will be required to authorise the i vesting of the lakes in. the Council. Before; however, such ah Act couldbe passed, the Council would require to give a specific undertaking ; to complete the "i necessary drainage works hi an approved ■ manner, as without some undertaking of the kind there ? would -, be .nO/ good grounds; for recommending .the Legislature to. pass 'the ;requn^d/Act.'v ; . . Petrie j seconded by Mr ßpber fcsoii— ' * That the Government be asked to give some definite information as to what action the ! Council will rhaye'to take for "the purpose of getting the lakes' vested in the Council.", Mr Robertson moved—" That "a subsidy of £ for £ to the amount of £150 be given. i towards opening up the main road to Taieri Beach." Seconded by Mr Murray. Mr Petrie moved as an amendment — u That the sum be only £100." Mr Murray seconded. The amendment was carried by the; casting vote of the Chairman. . Mr" Wayne moved— " That the Chair-: man be instructed to communicate, with the Railway Department with regard to the land required, for the canal at the Titri Station." Seconded by Mr Murray and carried. A circular was read from the Clerk to< the Wairarapa Council with reference to' the desirability of having a Board of Works ' established, with authority to raise loans for Counties. It was agreed that the matter should be referred to the County Council Conference to be held in Wellington. Mr Wayne moped — " That a b'st of the dog-owners who had paid, and those who have not paid, should be advertised." Seconded by Mr Petrie and carried. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Petrie — " That the road r line between section 0, block XII. , and section 6, block XII., North Molyneux should be closed." The Inspector's monthly report was read. It states that all of the roads are in a satisfactory state ; also, that the collector of dog taxes complained that many people whom he had visited had dogs on their premises, but on being asked for tho payment of the fees, would inform him. that the dogs did not belong to them, and that they were only taking care of them for other parties. Accounts amounting to the sum of L203 18s 9d were passed for payment. The revenue for the month of May was L351 14s 6d. The meeting then adjourned.
