CONCERT AND SOIREE AT CLINTON.

A concert and soiree in connection with the Home of Love Lodge of Good Templars, Clinton, took place in the Commercial Hotel there on the evening of Friday, 2_thMay. Mr Thomson, M.H.R., prosided. The hall was tastefully decorated with evergreens for the occasion. The attendance was very large. The Good Templars appeared in their regalia, The ! Order is very strong at Clinton. Mrs Kerle and Miss Colyer presided at the pianoforte. Tea was first served by the stewards. After tea the tables were taken outside. Even with the additional room thus made the hall was densely crowded. " The proceedings commenced with the National Anthem. The Chairman Baid that the National Anthem was peculiarly appropriate on the anniversary of the birth of their beloved Queen. He hoped they would all sing it with enthusiasm — which they did. Then followed an overture by the Clinton brass band. The band enlivened the proceedings on several occasions during the evening. To enumerate all the solos, duets, trios, and glees would take us a long time. Mrs Kerle, Miss Colyer, Mrs Templeton, and Messrs Lister, - Bateman, Lange, Gow, Bree, Templeton, and Barlow, vied with each other in their endeavours to promote the enjoyment of the large company assembled. The proceedings were brought to a close at half past ten. The Chah*man in the course of the evening directed the attention of the company to the very large sum spent in the Colony on intoxicating drink. He showed that the expenditure of this large sum did not contribute in any way to the wealth of the country. He cautioned the Good Templars present against always talkingonthesubject of temperance. There was a time for everything. If they talked on this subjet only on suitable occasions they would do more good than by always talking on it. In closing the proceedings he said he highly appreciated the honour of being asked to preside, especially as he was not a Good Templar. Such meetings as theso shewed that Good Templars and temperance people generally could pass their evenings in a rational and pleasant manner.
